Corfu is considered one of the most beautiful of all the Greek islands, thanks mainly to the lush greenery of the lands and mountains. The island has a huge number of beaches – of both sand and pebbles – along 217km of coastlines, with many tucked away in hidden niches just begging to be explored.
With a population that grows to over 110,000 people in peak tourist season, the island’s capital is the town of Corfu (Kerkyra), located on the east coast. Sunrock Backpackers Resort overlooks Pelekas Beach on the west side of the island, approximately 15 minutes drive from the main town.
The town of Corfu itself is primarily divided into two sections – the Old Town and the New Town – which are both steeped in history and fascinating to wander through. But it is discovering the countless quaint villages that are dotted along winding roads inland and through the mountains that is the real treat.
